Galvalume™ Coated Steel
American Shelter would like to acknowledge the technical assistance given by Bethlehem Steel in the process of developing the Galvalume coated arch building products and standards. Galvalume coated steel was developed by Bethlehem Steel to combine the corrosion resistance of aluminum and the sacrificial edge superiority of zinc coated (galvanized steel). Galvalume coating consists of an aluminum-zinc alloy (aluminum, zinc and silicon) applied by a continuous hot dip process. Galvalume coated steel can provide a superior corrosion resistance under many building situations. If properly designed, erected, and maintained, your Galvalume Wonder Building can provide superior building performance.
Advantages of Galvalume:
- 25-year mill warranty.
- Superior corrosion resistance to galvanized coating under normal atmospheric exposure.
- Cost is comparable to bare galvanized sheet.
- Available for arch buildings in thicknesses from .026 (24 gauge.) to .049 (18 gauge).
- Better corrosion resistance at sheared edges than aluminum-coated sheet steel.
Galvanized Coated Steel
Galvanized steel has provided Wonder Building customers with quality buildings since the early 1950s. While Galvalume has superior corrosion resistance under normal atmospheric conditions, galvanized is often the preferable choice for certain building applications, or when galvalume is not compatible with other building materials.
Advantages of Galvanized Steel:
- For livestock applications such as cattle or pig confinement buildings, galvanized is recommended over galvalume.
- When the arch building is to be grouted into a keyway or otherwise in contact with wet concrete.
- When the building is in contact with copper or lead.
- When steel thickness greater than .049 (18 gauge) is required.
- When the building will be field painted.
Pre-painted Galvalume vs. Pre-painted Galvanized
The corrosion resistance of pre-painted galvalume and pre-painted galvanized is equivalent.
Galvanealed Steel
When used on an arch building, the two main advantages of Galvanealed steel are ease of painting and improved coating adhesion. Contact your AST representative for more information.
