Steel comparison

Material Specifications

While Steel is the most common material, Wonder Buildings are also available in stainless steel and aluminum for special jobs. Steel buildings are available in the following commercial coatings: galvanized, galvalume, galvaneal, or pre-painted material. Arches and accessories are also available in uncoated or copper-bearing G-210 galvanized steel for specialized jobs. This page discusses steel specifications and use considerations, and includes information on galvalume and galvanized coated steel.

American Shelter buys certified, structural quality steel and retains all steel certificates on file. All steel is bought by purchase order to minimum specifications as dictated by the engineering.

All material produced by American Shelter maintains a one year manufacturer's limited warranty. Copies of this warranty are available from American Shelter, free of charge.

Galvalume™ is a registered trademark of BIEC International and carries a 20-year mill warranty against perforation and failure caused by corrosion.

Standard Purchasing Specifications
Commercially Coated Steel

The following are the standard specifications on commercially coated steel. Steel purchased by American Shelter must be certified to meet these minimum standards. All steel certificates are kept on file.

Galvanized Coated Steel:

ASTM A653, G-90 coated Galvanized Steel, Grade 40, Structural Quality.

Galvanealed Coated Steel:

ASTM A653, G-90 coated Galvanealed Steel, Grade 40, Structural Quality.

Galvalume™ Coated Steel:

ASTM A792, AZ 55 (metric=AZ 180) coated Galvalume Steel, Grade 40, Structural Quality. Galvalume is a registered trademark of BIEC International.

All steel is quoted and purchased to a minimum decimal thickness.

What Type of Coating is Appropriate for My Building or Project?

Galvalume vs. Galvanized

Since the 1950s, steel coating technology has brought many improvements to the building market. If properly designed, installed, and maintained, your Wonder Building can bring you a long service life. Part of proper design is choosing the right material and coating for your building.

Choice of coating should include factors such as compatibility of other building materials, end use of building, and foundation type among other factors. Your Wonder Building representative can discuss the options further with you. The following information is intended to clarify information about the types of steel coatings and provide you with general coating information.

Galvalume™ Coated Steel

American Shelter would like to acknowledge the technical assistance given by Bethlehem Steel in the process of developing the Galvalume coated arch building products and standards. Galvalume coated steel was developed by Bethlehem Steel to combine the corrosion resistance of aluminum and the sacrificial edge superiority of zinc coated (galvanized steel). Galvalume coating consists of an aluminum-zinc alloy (aluminum, zinc and silicon) applied by a continuous hot dip process. Galvalume coated steel can provide a superior corrosion resistance under many building situations. If properly designed, erected, and maintained, your Galvalume Wonder Arch Building can provide superior building performance.

Advantages of Galvalume

-20-Year Mill Warranty
-Superior Corrosion Resistance to Galvanized Coating Under Normal Atmospheric Exposure.
-Cost is comparable to bare Galvanized Sheet.
-Available for Arch Buildings in thicknesses from .026 (24 gauge.) to .074 (light 14 gauge).
-Better corrosion resistance at sheared edges than aluminum-coated sheet steel.

Galvanized Coated Steel

Galvanized Steel has provided Wonder Building customers with quality buildings since the early 1950s. While Galvalume has superior corrosion resistance under normal atmospheric conditions, galvanized is often the preferable choice for certain building applications or when galvalume is not compatible with other building materials.

Advantages of Galvanized Steel

-For livestock applications such as cattle or pig confinement buildings, galvanized is recommended over galvalume.
-When the arch building is to be grouted into a keyway or otherwise in contact with wet concrete.
-When the building is in contact with copper or lead.
-When steel thickness greater than .074 (light 14 gauge) is required.
-When field painting of the building.

Pre-painted Galvalume vs. Pre-painted Galvanized

The corrosion resistance of pre-painted galvalume and pre-painted galvanized is equivalent.
